DAPP Namibia inaugurates the linus shashipapo climate action centre
The new facility, located in the Kavango East Region, will promote practical learning and the dissemination of climate change adaptation solutions under the ADSWAC Project.
DAPP Namibia, in its capacity as the National Executing Entity for the ADSWAC Project, officially inaugurated the Linus Shashipapo Climate Action Centre on 16 October in the Kavango East Region, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture.
The ceremony was preceded by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, establishing the basis for the use of the Linus Shashipapo Youth Centre as a space dedicated to promoting climate action under the project.
Earlier this year, DAPP Namibia began construction of a prefabricated building equipped with four offices, three storerooms, a meeting room, a kitchen and sanitation facilities to support the centre’s operations.
During the event, DAPP Namibia Executive Director Alfred Besa explained that ADSWAC is a regional project implemented along the Cubango River Basin in Namibia and Angola. The project is implemented by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS), with funding from the Adaptation Fund.
Representing the Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Paulus Nghitembua, Deputy Executive Director for Lifelong Learning, Arts and Culture, thanked DAPP Namibia for working with the Government to transform the facility into a functional centre focused on agriculture and entrepreneurship.
He also highlighted the centre’s potential to become a regional reference point for demonstrating climate adaptation practices and promoting youth learning.
Meanwhile, Boniface Kahare, Deputy Director in the Office of the Governor, representing the Governor of the Kavango East Region, congratulated DAPP Namibia on its partnership with the Ministry. He also called on development partners to align their interventions with national priorities and strengthen coordination with government authorities.
The ceremony brought together government representatives, traditional authorities, students from three schools, producer organisations and community members.
The centre will provide practical demonstrations of climate change adaptation measures, including a plant nursery, fuel-efficient cookstoves, an improved latrine and a model agricultural demonstration field.
The facility will also serve as a space for capacity-building activities, early warning information, awareness campaigns and the sharing of experiences and knowledge on climate change adaptation.
