Calai Farmers Increase Production and Sales

In Calai Municipality, farmers supported by the ADSWAC Project are increasing the production and sale of vegetables through activities carried out in model fields and on the producers’ own farms.

Of the 30 Producer Organisations supported by the project, 14 are currently involved in vegetable production and harvesting. More than 150 farmers are already selling products such as cabbage, Chinese cabbage, aubergines and onions.

In the model fields, harvesting takes place twice a week, and the produce is sold directly to traders who visit the fields. Part of the produce is also transported to neighbouring Namibia, where it is sold.

The producers are supported by agricultural instructors, who have strengthened their knowledge of pest control, harvest record-keeping and revenue management. Each harvest is recorded by the organisation’s secretary, including the quantity sold and the income generated.

The revenue is used by the organisations to support new activities, including the purchase of seeds, livestock manure and other materials needed for production.
